Veneers Q & A

What is a dental veneer?

Even with proper dental care, it’s possible for your teeth to become misshapen, discolored, or damaged. When this happens, the strength and appearance of your teeth can become compromised.

Dental veneers can help improve the appearance, shape, and color of your teeth, restoring them to their full beauty. A dental veneer is a very thin, tooth-colored shell that is placed over the front of your damaged tooth to improve its appearance.

This shell is bonded firmly in place and custom-designed to look and feel exactly as your original tooth did. The veneer can be made out of several materials, including porcelain or resin.

Why are dental veneers needed?

There are many different solutions to fix the strength and appearance of your teeth, depending on the original reason for damage or discoloration. A dental veneer is especially useful when addressing:

  • Teeth that have become worn down from use
  • Discolored teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Irregularly shaped teeth

What can I expect at my appointment?

Installing a dental veneer usually takes about three trips to the dentist to complete. Initially, the team at First Smile Dental discusses your goals in-depth, examines your mouth, and conducts certain tests such as X-rays to determine the right course of treatment.

Next, they prepare your tooth to receive the veneer by shaving off a thin segment of the tooth. In addition, they will make a model of your tooth, which will be sent to a laboratory to have the veneer custom-made for your mouth.

Once your veneer is received, the team makes last-minute adjustments to ensure the fit is right. Your veneer is then bonded to your tooth using a special cement-like substance and light to securely lock it in place. Excess cement is removed, and your new veneer is ready.
